Can we be true to who we are if we don’t truly know who we are? If we are unaware of our own identity, we cannot then maintain our identity in the midst of the masses.
Father, You have masterfully created each of Your children, imprinting the details of their personality and character on the very soul that is captured someplace between their brain and their heart. Our complexities are far beyond comprehension or understanding, but still people try. I am fascinated by the studies and research and the development of personality theory (after all, I am a psychology major), but I know the true answers to who people are and why they are the way they are will never be found in the answers of a questionnaire or in the analyzing of a person’s DNA.
From the beginning, humankind has been from God, both in image and in character. He sculpted Adam out of dirt in what I imagine to be the most beautiful, surreal place this world has ever seen. The Creator of the universe scooped a pile of dirt, which had been in existence for three days, into His palms and made a man that resembles Himself. As if that alone is not beautiful enough, He continues, “God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). Then from the being He had just given life, He created woman from his rib. God created us, physically forming us from dust and from a rib loving us so deeply that He created us in His likeness. With His very breath, God brought humankind into existence, not speaking into the air as He did for the rest of creation, but breathing directly into Adam’s nostrils. That intimate closeness was God’s perfect intention for each of our lives that He could exhale His own personality, character, and personality into our very first inhale. I choose to believe the first breath of every person is given directly from our loving Father to awaken us to life. Our identity comes from the breath of life, God’s exhale into every individual’s nostrils. With the first inhale, we are breathing in the identity and life of our Creator. We breathe Him in…then the heart breaking reality of the fall is that after that moment it is our own choice whether we continue to exhale Him through our lives and breathe Him in again. The trials can make it more difficult and distractions of other air become more tantalizing, but He remains…waiting patiently for the remembering of our awakening so we can choose Him. When we walk in His closeness breathing in the sweetest, clearest air in existence, we are breathing the unique identity He intentioned for us from the beginning. Scientists can never truly discover the secrets of personality and why people are who they are because the physical evidence dissipates into the air. While genes, DNA, surveys, and advanced imaging of the brain can assist in the understanding of our function and reveal the results of our personality, none of that is the key.
It is by faith. “For the things, which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal,” (2 Corinthians 4:16).

The simplicity of the Creator and the created… Why do we so often make it more complicated than that?!?!
